This is the sort of dramatic movies I like to see made more frequently by HK cinema. I really have high expectations on this one.

http://paper.wenweipo.com/2011/03/23/OT1103230004.htm

Mark

What are you talking about?
It is true that the blogger picks apart some big budget movies, but I also see him being kind to some mainstream movies, and critical of others too.
Basically the blogger is all over the map, so there is no need to complain.

I’d like to hear what you think about it after you see it, Ken.
I watched it today and found it to be fairly decent, but the plot falters quite a bit in the last 1/3. It does feel at times that the director is trying too hard to be “deep”.
Good performances all round, especially by Ye. I appreciate finally seeing a HK movie that isn’t dominated by mainland actors.
Tony
“I appreciate finally seeing a HK movie that isn’t dominated by mainland actors.” this is the point.
Rat

I don’t know why you think this. This movie is very entertaining. My expectations are indeed high, and its results as good commercial entertainment are enough to satisfy me.
I know the director and the production team , as well as its major stars, did not really helm/star in a movie for a long time, that makes me even more surprised at how entertaining it was, especially with some of the plot twist.
I wholeheartedly agree that everybody did their part, and Willem Chan finally shown some major improvement as a credible performer.
Ken Resurrected
Guess it is too easy to complain and not enough encouragement.
Most people who complain about the shortcomings of this movie fail to appreciate the simple fact that this movie even can get made, with none of the stars having any bankability whatsoever.
Let’s face it, this movie is not a masterpiece, but it should at least keep most of its audiences engaged and entertained, even when some of the plot twist was a little unbelievable (for e.g. anything done by 吳家麗’s driver in the 2nd half of the movie), but harmless.
I saw the movie at UA Times Square 8pm, capacity only about 35-40%, about same capacity as BLACK SWAN (but this movie in its 4th week), so there should be more people giving this movie a chance, instead of making harsh comments and kill its chances of finding an audience.
Ken Resurrected
I was surprised to see that too, and quite frankly, he did not disappoint too much. There are not really a lot of actors left in HK, so for better or worse, we are stuck with him for the moment, but I am glad to see him having some improvement.
The UA Times Square show I attended has some younger viewers, so maybe those people are fans of him.

Perhaps some people want a completely coherent story that have perfect closure to every character, but the results right now is satisfying commercial entertainment.
Obviously this kind of movie is not everybody’s cup of tea, even in Indie Hollywood, many similar movies has plot twists, and they are not always well-received.
What I care right now is that the movie is well made in almost all aspects, and I appreciate the fact this movie can even get made now. Yet it seems many people like to see this movie fail, or come here to pick apart the movie like it has nothing good to offer.
Shame on those people.

hi, ken,
as the writer and director of this movie, i must express my appreciation to your support to this film as well as to hong kong cinema.
we did spend every penny of the budget to this production, and tried our best to entertain the audience. as for the look, it’s our fault that we didn’t have the money like the big budgeted movie to retone the color of the film. so maybe some audience would regard it as a movie that looks like being made some years ago. about the plot twist, i have no regrets at all. if they want a striaght story about these women, i have no answer. i just wonder if they would feel it boring had it be not twisted. and to be honest, the twists here are true human drama that can happen in real life, even the twist about the driver at the second half of the movie.

I keep coming back to this post hoping for actual discussion but it seems like every comment is either heaping praises on it or “OMG IT SUCKS!” I actually quite enjoyed this movie, notwithstanding some of the faults I found with it, but it’s almost as if there’s no middle ground here.
Since the writer/director is here — though I have no idea if he’ll even read this — I’d like to ask him whether he meant to write Alice’s character so inconsistently. One of the biggest problems I had with the film is that I didn’t understand at all what were her motivations. Was she seeking revenge on her husband? Did she still love her husband (at the end it seems like she did)? If she fell in love with Bill, why did she suddenly switch to loving Ben? Yet as soon as her husband came back, she was willing to give up Ben! I personally had no idea what was going on with her and I found that frustrating.
I do commend the way you wrote Josephine and her husband’s relationship. I thought it was the most moving relationship in the whole film, even more so than Josephine’s love for Alice. The scene and conversation between Josephine and Black White Gor where Josephine is trying to finish painting was well-written and superbly acted.
I thought some of the plot twists were ridiculous (the driver one was predictable and, I’m sorry to say, not very interesting) but they were quite clever and did leave the audience entertained from what I saw. On the whole, I liked it and would watch it again if my schedule allowed. I would not hesitate to recommend it, and I plan to do so to my overseas friends as soon as the DVD comes out. In my opinion, though it is far from perfect (there are a few things I had a huge problem with), it is on the whole a good movie both for entertainment value and for academic discussion.
poonsan
As the writer/director of Hi, Fidelity, I am more than happy to discuss with my audience. Especially when someone brought up good topic in a sensible way.
For Alice’s psychology, she’s first angry watching the photo of her betrayed husband and wanted to take revenge. Then being push to by her peers to the gigolo bar, she was on one hand feeling herself out of the place, while on the other hand being attracted by Bill. When Bill left Pinky to talk to her, she was flattered. But still she wouldn’t leave contact to Bill. At that time she thought it was only a night going out, there should not be any further development. Then Bill gave her his phone and called her. Gradually she was seduced and went to bed with Bill. When Bill told her he couldn’t wait to see her and came to HK to meet her, she was thrilled. But then when Ben revealed his identity, she knew that Bill has cheated her. She was pushed to a point where, as the film suggested, a new born woman had come out and took over her old self. Then Ben was so wholeheartedly staying with her and she was moved. But the night Ben went out and never came back, she became to think if Ben was also leaving her for good. So when she listened to her husband’s remorse through the recorded message, she became to realise that maybe she should go back to her family. But then again her husband was suspicious about her relationship with Josephine, then Alice realised that there would be no turning back, she had to make up her mind to live her own life. So she left on the boat and started with her gardening business until Ben found her a year later.
I am not telling all these for the first time. They are all in the movie if someone will check it out. People may like the film or dislike it, but I did try my best to portrait every character as he/she should be. And again thanks to the cast, I think they have made the characters alive. Thanks again.
Ken Resurrected
Wow if you are really the director of the movie, you must make a spoiler alert warning with your last lengthy comment regarding Alice’s character. I think without your detailed explanation, her behaviour in the entire movie makes sense.
It is very hard to satisfy everybody, especially picky and fake HK people, but no matter what, you should be proud of making the movie.
