踏入二月，對不少觀眾而言，也許期待著奧斯卡的頒獎禮於下旬舉行。對於一眾發行商來說，就是推出有分提名的電影的大好機會。不過，一堆提名電影同期推出，實在難以預計誰勝誰負。
近年不少發行商都對於奧斯卡頒獎禮存在恫憬，就是那些電影得獎後會有助票房，結果大熱電影便剛好安排於奧斯卡頒獎禮的前一周開畫，其他電影也會於相近時期上映。以今年為例，單是二月二月至三月一日的五個星期裡，便有九部奧斯卡提名電影開畫，當中呼聲較高的《雨果的巴黎奇歷險》與《星光夢裡人》更是安排於頒獎禮前的二月廿三日開畫，看來是志在必得。
不過，單是奧斯卡電影已有九部，若果合計其他上映的電影，五星期裡合共上映的電影便有廿七部之多。以香港目前的戲院與銀幕數目，大家也許預期不少電影將會拆場放映，而有些電影則只會作小型發行。有心觀看電影的朋友，也許最好事先查一下想看的電影上映情況計劃一下好了。

But you got it right, all of the above movies does not have any mainstream appeal in Hong Kong, unlike last years’ BLACK SWAN and THE KING’S SPEECH and 127 HOURS. Movie fans really need to look out for their screen times carefully. Support the movies early on so that they may get prolonged room.
Steven Spielberg’s name did not help ADVENTURES OF TIN TIN to get great numbers, and WAR HORSE does not look like it can achieve decent numbers.
THE IDES OF MARCH, to me, looks like it has break out potential despite only getting one nomination, due obviously this is election year around the world and in HK, so the movie is topical, but when I say break out, it may mean reaching an ok HK$3-4 million.
I also think A SEPARATION may surprise us. Hong Kong is quite receptive to foreign language movies, and this one, whoever handles its distribution, needs to advertise and cite that it is the movie that beats out many strong Asian contenders at the foreign film Oscar. Its star may even beat Deanie Ip as Best Actress in the Asian Film Awards, so hype the movie as much as you could.
A sidenote, movies not mentioned in this article, THE DESCENDANTS is already showing now with very decent initial numbers. The IRON LADY will be screened on March 8th, and that one has potential to do close to what THE QUEEN did in 2007.

Michael Fessbender not getting nominated is not a surprise. It’s been a while since NC-17 rated movies were nominated for big Oscars.
Tilda Swinton, a previous Oscar Winner, plus getting widely recognized in this year’s award circuit, including nominated at the Golden Globes and Screen Actor’s Guild Awards, got left out is a surprise. Apparently the Academy wants to reward the GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO for something. The Academy always love to see new faces in the Best Actress category, just look at their history of nominating young actresses in this category. WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN being distributed by a very small unknown company also hurts Tilda’s chances.

《雨果的巴黎奇幻歷險》(Hugo 3D)本來都想看的，只是一看到是3D，就打退堂鼓……《J．艾德格》個名改得好特別，原來J．艾德格就是一手創立聯邦調查局（FBI）並擔任近半世紀局長的胡佛（John Edgar Hoover），刻意捨熟悉的姓而留陌生的名，不知有何用意？

It is surprising that WAR HORSE did not fare too bad compare to MUNICH, so it is a pleasant thing to some degree. THE DESCENDANTS ending up finishing close to UP IN THE AIR is very nice. In fact, elsewhere in the world both movies are doing about the same level of business.
However, there is no way THE IRON LADY will top THE KING’S SPEECH. First of all, the movie make no mention of Margaret Thatcher’s dealing with the Hong Kong handover, meaning it blow a big chance to appeal to HK audiences. Second of all, it does not seems like it is a great movie compare to THE KING’S SPEECH. Its ratings all over the world are middling. Third of all, it is not a big box office hit worldwide compare to THE KING’ SPEECH. It receive generally lukewarm reception in the UK, so what makes you think Hong Kong will be the exception?
