  1. The movie had beaten my last original forecast of HK$55 million many many weeks ago.

This is a rare case of a movie with supposedly limited teen appeal actually crossing over to multiple demographics.

Most mainland and Hong Kong films are not catered to teens, and those that do, don’t do a good job.

If 3D SEX AND ZEN brought in mainland visitors to see the movie in HK, then did APPLE receive the same enthusiasm, since the mainland version should have gotten heavily edited out? It’s just amazing the movie could have such a long run extending to Christmas and New Years Eve with all the heavy competition for screens.

Perhaps you are still new in box office watching, but I do not like your over simplified take. Yes it is true inflation does help push recent movies into higher grosses, but that does not diminish the smashing success of this movie.

Same as in Hollywood as it was in Hong Kong, the number of tickets sold by movies released many decades ago tend to be the higher grossing movies after factoring inflation. For example, GONE WITH THE WIND, a movie released in the 1930s, is still the highest grossing movies in terms of actual tickets sold. The same theory goes to North American grosses for other Hollywood blockbusters during the 1970s to 1980s.
The current crop of top grossing Hong Kong movies, including TOY STORY 3, AVATAR or TITANIC, are also aided by 3D surcharges or extra length of time surcharges.

What makes 那些年,我們一起追的女孩 so impressive is that the movie was never expected to be a big hit. It did not receive any aid from extended holidays (since when does movies released in Autumn can gross over HK$40 million?). Most top grossing Chinese language movies were released many years ago during CNY when more people of lower classes ‘truly’ have more holiday time off and that watching martial arts movie was a tradition in itself. Moreover, Taiwanese movies never do more than HK$10 million business. Teen oriented romantic movies doing over HK$20 million is also rare. This one also does not have wide appeal compare to 功夫 or many other blockbusters. Therefore credit must go to the strong Fox marketing team.
