Ryan

Actually even in Canada, audiences mostly immediately leave during the start of closing credits, so I would not say that it is purely a Hong Kong phenomenom. Most people just treat the movies as entertainment.
I think a more disturbing example is that audiences still leave the movie when they clearly knew about a Q & A session during film festival screenings. Believe me it happens.

As Ken Resurrected has said, leaving before the credits end is a bad habit worldwide that is unlikely to change. On the other hand, you have to remember sometimes people leave as an action of disapproval too. I stay for films which I loved or which I had to think about what I just saw. If I have to watch some mindless mainstream flick with friends, I typically leave after the director and main cast names appear in the credits.
As long as people don’t make a fuss and the lights remain off, I’m OK with that. The far more infuriating things in HK is late audiences and mobile phones. Perhaps Ryan would like to do an article on the latest incredulous invention, the U-Late hotline?

Correction: the U-Late hotline?

stann
B
First, why is that considered a bad habit?
And how does staying for the credits represent respect? If anything, we are showing our respect by watching the film in its entirety. In my opinion, the ending of a film (not the credits…unless if there are outtakes) is the dessert because we’ll see what the payoff for the film is.
There are some reasons to stay for the credits though. Good music or outtakes. Maybe if you are intrigued by a character/actor and need to look them up (typically I will use IMDB or other movie sites if I am curious.)
People leaving after the credits roll doesn’t mean they are not respecting the filmmakers. They paid and watched the film; they are free to do whatever they want after the credits (within reason, of course…like exiting quiet from the theater). Just my two cents.

Agree !
Ken Resurrected
I think in this day and age, people actually paying to see a movie and watch them in movie theatres, is indeed already respecting the filmmakers. Let us not start with people buying DVD/VCD/Blue Ray disc and skipping the theatre entirely.
We also cannot fault people who leave the movie mid way due to whatever reason, most of the time not liking what they see or is offended by material in the movie. This happens even at sophisticated film festival screenings.
I think Ryan is passionate about the movies, and there is room for expansion for this topic about when and why people should leave the theatre. Certainly a good debate.
